Social media might have brought a revolution in communication some decades back but today it stands synonymous to social distancing . People these days are consuming social media thinking of it as a packet of chips which they never want to stop eating. They blindly believe in whatever the Internet says without checking any proof leading to chaos. Difficult to say if our virtual reality is taking over us or vice versa because reels and Instagram stories have engulfed our experiences and it seems anything we are doing is worthwhile only if it is shared on social media . Validation in forms of likes , comments and forwards decides our self worth. These are the reasons we are not able to build a meaningful connection with people. When was the last time you actually talked to your friend, held his hand, gave him a hug or just comforted him by being around ? Although you kept hitting the like button on his Instagram post without even reading it through. Don’t you think your bond with your friend is becoming artificial? According to research people often develop social anxiety due to excessive use of social media and face difficulties in interacting with people. Another major cause of anxiety is trolling. Trolling affects the self esteem of people and makes them feel insecure about themselves and their lifestyle. Furthermore, social media is creating wrong perceptions in the minds of people leading to envy ,jealousy, unhealthy competition and a feeling of being ‘not enough’. Social media has indeed rung the death knell of true genuine human relationships and the fabric of the society is getting torn into pieces. It’s high time we rethink our presence on social media and start reconnecting with people in reality. Let’s ‘Disconnect to connect’.
